Early Childhood Development 

Programme Overview

Before KHULA, there were no preschools in this part of KwaZulu-Natal. Today, four centres give over 350 children the strong start every child deserves.

Our Early Childhood Development programme builds language, maths, and social skills through play and daily care from trained local educators. Another 500 children at 12 community crèches now benefit from shared resources and support through our Community ECD Development Programme.

Why it
Matters

The early years are critical. 90% of a child’s brain development happens before the age of five, yet in South Africa, access to quality early childhood education remains deeply unequal.

  • Only around 60% of South African children aged 3–5 attend any kind of early learning programme and this figure drops significantly in rural settings
  • Research shows that children who attend quality ECD programmes are more likely to succeed in school, stay in school longer, and go on to access higher education or employment
  • The World Bank has identified ECD as one of the most cost-effective investments a country can make in reducing inequality and improving long-term development outcomes
